I repeat, this is not a book club. However, I just wanted to put it out there that I began reading Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. And if anyone else wants to read it at the same time as me, it would be really fun to talk about it. I’m only 3 chapters in and I really enjoy it.
The reason I say that this is not a book club, is because the last book club was so much work! I’m sorry to be a humbug, but it was. But it has been a few months (maybe even close to a year now) that the McCullough Hills Ward Book Club met, and I’m craving some literary talk but not at the expense of the weight of responsibility for a book club. There are some people who have asked me about starting it up again, and I’m sorry to disappoint, but this is my sanity we are talking about, and thus this is my compromise.
(Ironic in the context of the theme of Atlas Shrugged that I am shirking the responsibility of a book club.)

The Road by Cormac McCarthy

This book was scary to me. I felt so affected by the emptiness that the author composes in the characters, the land, the road, everything. It wasn’t till I finished the book, and a couple days went by that I started to drift to any purpose or reason behind it.
We think about the end of the world, about how it will come, and we theorize why, but this book dives WAY past all that into the true life after the end of the world. Who thought about an “after” to the end of the world.
Ok, so I’ve described the book as scary and bleak, why read it, because it is short, and WOW it will make you think. Oh, read it around Thanksgiving time and you will really be able to think of lots of things that you are thankful for when it comes your time around the dining room table…”What are you thankful for Janae?” Well, get a second helping of pumpkin pie because you are going to need it before I’m done.
